The New Jersey Medical School Global Tuberculosis Institute is the tuberculosis Regional Training and Medical Consultation Center for the northeastern United States

 

 

Course Description and Overall Goal

 

The purpose of this training is to increase provider knowledge and awareness of Tuberculosis, including TB epidemiology, TB treatment, laboratory diagnosis, pediatric TB, missed opportunities, and contact investigations. This training utilizes lectures, discussions, and case-based presentations.

 

Who Should Attend

 

This training is designed for physicians, nurses , and other healthcare professionals involved in the management of patients with TB.

 

Why Course Is Needed

 

As the incidence of tuberculosis continues to decline, maintaining clinical and public health expertise in TB is particularly challenging. This training aims to build the TB knowledge base of clinicians in order to promptly identify and adequately treat cases of active and latent TB.

 

Objectives

 

Upon completion of this course participants should be able to:

  • Interpret the global, national and local epidemiology of TB to better screen and treat groups that are at high risk for TB     
  • Apply current recommendations for the treatment of TB to prevent  development of primary drug resistance
  • Review the role of the laboratory for TB diagnostic testing and monitoring response to therapy
  • Apply current standards of practice in the diagnosis, treatment and management of TB in children and adolescents to ensure successful outcomes
  • Coordinate with local providers and organizations in order to prevent missed opportunities in the diagnosis of TB
  • Apply the fundamentals of contact investigation in assessing potential TB exposure and transmission in the community  

 

Course Requirements

 

In order to meet the learning objectives and receive continuing education credits, participants are required to attend the entire course and complete an evaluation form at the end of the course. A post-course follow up evaluation will be sent to participants within 2 months of the course.

Cancellation Information

 

UMDNJ reserves the right to modify the activity content, faculty and activities, and reserves the right to cancel this activity, if necessary. There is no cancellation fee, however, registrants who are unable to attend may cancel up to 2 weeks prior to the course for a full refund. Refunds cannot be given to registrants who do not cancel in advance.
